Healthy Skin: What Is It and How to Achieve It

Healthy Skin: What Is It and How to Achieve It

Skin is a complex organ made up of three tissue layers–the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. These layers work together to protect your body from external harm, regulate your temperature, and help you maintain overall health. But what does it mean to have healthy skin, and how can you achieve it?

According to Cleveland Clinic, the epidermis is the top layer that produces new skin cells, supports immune defense, and contains melanin. The middle layer, the dermis, contains collagen and elastin to keep skin flexible. It also houses pain receptors, sweat glands and body temperature. The bottom layer, the hypodermis insulates the body with connective tissue and fat.

Healthy skin doesn’t always mean flawless skin, it means that your skin is able to fulfill its role as a protective barrier.

Healthy skin can look like:

  • A smooth texture with minimal flakiness or rough patches.
  • A natural glow—not too oily or too dry.
  • Skin that doesn’t feel tight, itchy, or irritated.

How to Achieve and Maintain Healthy Skin

1. Don’t Overstimulate Your Skin

While skincare tools like cleansing brushes can be beneficial, overusing them can harm your skin barrier especially if you have sensitive skin.

  • Cleansing Brushes: Try to use this less often in your routine, frequent use could cause overstimulation or irritation.
  • If you have sensitive skin–skin that is prone to redness, dryness, or discomfort– ingredients like retinol, AHAs, and BHAs can irritate skin if overused. You may want to start slow and listen to how your skin responds.

2. Protect Your Skin’s Barrier

Your skin barrier is crucial for keeping out harmful germs and locking in moisture. Damaging it can lead to irritation, sensitivity, and dryness. To protect it:

  • Use gentle cleansers that don’t strip your skin of its natural oils. Our Clean Queen Glycolic cleanser is a great option to gently, but deeply cleanse pores of oil and debris.
  • Incorporate products with intensely hydrating ingredients, such as our Snail Serum, which includes Hydraprotectol, Hyadisine, and Niacinamide–ingredients which support collagen and elastin production, intensely hydrate, and smooths fine lines.
  • Using an enriching moisturizer that provides long-lasting hydration is also key to protecting your skin. Use Antidote Moisturizer twice a day to keep your skin nourished.

4. Build Up Your Skin Barrier

In order to protect your skin’s barrier, it also needs to be strengthened!

  • Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and reveals smoother skin. You can build up your skin’s barrier by carefully building up its tolerance to exfoliation. Depending on your skin type, you can start from one to three times per week and work up to every day. However, overdoing it can lead to dryness and irritation so make sure to listen to your skin’s response. In addition to powerful actives, our Power Wash Peel Pads include aloe vera to soothe the skin!

4. Protect Against Environmental Damage

Daily sunscreen use is essential for protecting your skin from UV rays, which can damage collagen, cause hyperpigmentation, and lead to premature aging. To combat environmental pollution and weather changes effects to the skin, Snake Serum contains CoQ10, an antioxidant that protects skin from free radicals.

Healthy skin isn’t just about appearances—it’s about ensuring your skin can function as it’s supposed to. When your skin is healthy, it acts as a barrier, keeping out harmful germs and pollutants while helping regulate your body’s temperature. Nevertheless, there are actionable steps you can take to maintain a healthy glow and healthy skin!
